This course introduces key foundations for UMD students who are serving as tutors or mentors in a PK-12 setting. Completion of the online course will result in the "PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Foundations" micro-credential. Participants will enhance their ability to create meaningful and professional connections with young learners, understand high-impact tutoring strategies, and identify ways to adapt one's practices to learners' needs.

Open only to UMD students, staff, and faculty.

SKILLS ACQUIRED:

– Active listening, empathy, and adapting language and tone to support inclusive learning, student engagement, and positive relationships with tutees
– Understanding of cultural responsiveness and Its impact on tutoring and learning
– Fostering resilience and a growth mindset in learners
– Tailoring one’s approach based on age, cultural responsiveness, and social-emotional needs.
– Critical reflection on personal tutoring practices and biases
– High-impact tutoring strategies, such as a targeted goal setting and data-driven instruction
– Strategies for respectful and professional communication with community and school partners, tutees, and tutees’ families
