Full course description
This course introduces key strategies for UMD students who are serving as tutors or mentors with PK-12 learners. Participants will enhance their understanding of evidence-based approaches for learning in reading and math as well as for supporting English speakers of other languages in tutoring and mentoring settings. Completion of the online course will result in the "PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Strategies" micro-credential. Participants will enhance their ability to support young learners with key approaches to literacy, math and multilingual learning.
Open only to UMD students, staff, and faculty.
SKILLS ACQUIRED:
– Application of Science of Reading principles and 8 Standards of Mathematical Practices to tutoring and mentoring experiences
– Understanding of word-solving strategies and fix-up strategies to help students decode unfamiliar words and address reading breakdowns in real time
– Apply foundational tutoring moves to nurture students’ mathematical thinking and build their
foundational math skills
– Develop tools for supporting students in developing reasoning, persistence, and communication
skills
– Tailoring one’s approach based on learner’s multilingual abilities
